It seemed to me that they both (XPE Win CE) use nearly the same error
message
to indicate that MSN Messenger needs to be upgraded as a solution to the
error message (ultimatum date: Oct.15, 2003):

"Windows Mobile-devices that require the update will show the following
error message upon attempted logon to the MSN Messenger Service:

"Logon to the Messenger Service failed because the service is not
compatible with this version of the program."

SH: Quoting from google:

Question:
"On my XPe image,When signing onto to Messenger i get the following error:
"Signing into .net messenger service failed because the service is not
compatible with this version of the program."

Any idea what component im missing or need to upgrade?"

Answer:
There has been an update for Windows .Net Messenger (Hotfix Q824704).
Install this QFE Rollup if you have done that yet:
http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/details.aspx?FamilyId=2FC450E7-A2D9-4E75-B6BA-9570653F0891&displaylang=en
(also make sure you resolve all the component's dependencies)"

SH: Quoting from the url just above (issue date: 9/19/2003):

"This is the Microsoft Windows XP Embedded with Service Pack 1 component
update to address Windows XP Embedded with Service Pack 1 QFE Rollup
(824704) (currently unpublished)." ....

"After importing this update into your database, add the following
components to your configuration(s) if you wish to use this update:

Windows .Net Messenger - Hotfix Q824704

Application Compatibility Core - Hotfix Q824704
Microsoft Data Access Components (MDAC) - Hotfix Q824704
Remote Assistance Channel - Hotfix Q824704
Server Printing - Hotfix Q824704
Display Control Panel - Hotfix Q824704
Shockwave Flash - Hotfix Q824704"
Windows Script Engines - Hotfix Q824704
Administration Support Tools - Hotfix Q824704
