AIM Typing Indicator Features Lost..How do I get it back?

I lost the "typing indicator feature" when IM'ing a
friend and also the smiley faces that I can use with AIM.
I was able to see when friend started to type and also
include smiley faces with my writing. Somehow they
disappeared....Help
