getting rid of Messenger

Is there any way to get rid of Messenger in my XP
product? I tried to delete the progran using the
Add/Delete and it does not appear there any more but I
still have the icon in the startup tray and if I right
click and try to delete - it will not allow the process. I
want to delete this pesty little thing completely!
