Application specific messages between clients (API usage)?

I want to solve the following problem:

Two people (John and Eve) are both using application X. Both John and
Eve and are running Windows messenger.

Now John wants to fetch data from his application X and send it to
Eve´s application X using the messenger client. Some sort of messenger
plug-in or such must be running on both John´s and Eve´s computers.
Eve´s messenger client must be able to understand that this in not a
regular message, and then give it to the applictaion X running on her
computer.

Is this possible to achieve somhow, without having to write a client
of my own. Ideally I would like to use the messenger client API
(preferrably the client API of the 5.0 version) to add this
functionality to the client.

I have searched the messenger client API without finding this. Any
hints?
