Your problem is you installed "MSN Messenger 6.1" not
Windows Messenger 6.1. So in reality you have 2 Messenger
Services running at the same time. There's a difference
between the 2. The one that installs with Windows XP is
Windows Messenger 4.7 and as of now the newest one
available is Windows Messenger 5.0. You have installed
MSN Messenger 6.1 which is a whole different Messenger so
now you have both of them trying to start at startup.
What you'd have to do to use MSN Messenger 6.1 without
having a conflict would be to stop Windows Messenger from
running. To do this you have to follow the instructions
here at Microsoft:
http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;en-
us;302089
Once you finish doing this from Microsoft you can install
MSN Messenger 6.1 and run it without any trouble but my
suggestion to you is to un-install the MSN messenger and
update the Windows Messenger to 5.0 as it does pretty
close to everything the MSN Messenger will do but you
won't have any conflicts that way. You can download
Windows Messemger 5.0 from here:

Good Luck

>I have installed the Windows Messenger 6.1, but
everytime I logon, Windows 5.0 logs on without me knowing
and I have to shut it down with ctrl-alt-del before
Messenger 6.1 can be used. What should I have done before
dling 6.1 and what can I do know to stop 5.0 running?
