Windows Messenger 5.0 verus Windows Messenger 6.1

I have installed the Windows Messenger 6.1, but everytime I logon, Windows 5.0 logs on without me knowing and I have to shut it down with ctrl-alt-del before Messenger 6.1 can be used. What should I have done before dling 6.1 and what can I do know to stop 5.0 running?
