Not recieving new email alerts

My windows messenger won't alert me to new email from my msn account and
when I right click on the messenger icon (on the taskbar) and "My a-mail
inbox", my outlook express program starts instead. Other people that use
messenger say that windows messenger should launch my hotmail account
instead of outlook express. Is there setting I need to change? Thank you in
advance for any help on this!
