do not hear voice when using the mic

I have been using the mic, with my windows messager for years now. Suddenly last month, I lost the sound. My head set tests perfectly and I hear all the sounds coming from the computer, but nothing from the person I talk to. They hear me.
I have done the sound test and get this message An error accurred during Direct Play Vice set up. The error code is
0x80004005. Windows cannot execute DPVSetup.exe, use Add/Remove Programs control panel to install.
I have tried using the information found, Microsoft Knowledge Base Article - 282882 , but it does not apply to my problem.
