Contacts see me when I'm not running messenger

Okay, so I come home from work, turn on my PC... And...
My friends start to IM me - Hello? I haven't even launched MSN messenger
yet!?!?!
I'm running WinXP Pro and the latest version of MSN messenger.
Is this just another example of Micro$oft knowing what's best for us and
knitting the messenger tightly to the most basic of functions - when it
should be a standalone app?

Yeah, I'm irritated... Is there a fix for this? Or is it an "undocumented
feature"?
