problem with MSN Messenger

I'm using MSN Messenger 6 and everytime I click "1 new email" in the main interface window. It opens a new Internet Explorer window and logs me into my Hotmail account. Then when I close and return to the main interface window it still remains and says I have 1 new email. It turns out that I don't have any new email and the only thing I can do is sign out and then sign back in into MSN Messenger.

Another thing is that I have to sign out and sign back in to find out that I have any new email. I used to stay signed in and I get the email alerts but I don't seem to get them anymore.

What's the problem?
