Thanks for the reply. As my original post was a week ago, I had stopped
checking that far back just yesterday. I have read numerous posts with the
same basic problem: no audio and or video from one or more participants.
The apparent reasons for this seem to be varied. Anti-Virus applications
causing problems, damaged files in Messenger itself, a bad installation of
Messenger, firewalls blocking access and so on.

When I read in the help files in Messenger that it works through firewalls
as long as access is granted I thought to myself "no kidding" it obviously
has to have internet access to work. My Zone Alarm Pro is configured to
give Messenger internet access. I'm not going to cripple my firewall to use
Messenger. That makes no sense at all.

I still have no answer as to why my connection drops if I attempt a voice or
video session with my friend while he stays connected to the internet
regardless. I can send him files, but he can't send me files. We can text
chat, no problem at all.

As far as services are concerned, I'm talking about the Windows XP Services
like Web Client, SSDP Discovery Service, Background Intelligent Transfer
Service, etc. All found in Control Panel>Performance and
Maintenance>Administrative Tools>Services. Which of these is required, and
in what running configuration, Automatic or Manual, for MSN Messenger and
Windows Messenger to function?

Thanks so much for your replies. I'm looking for more information, so maybe
I'll find a way to make Messenger work. It obviously works for some people.
