Did you possibly install XP by popping the cd into a running Win2k installation?
If so, you have simply setup a dual boot machine.
I'd start over by booting up with the XP cd,
formatting the drive and performing a fresh install.
Of course, if there is any needed data on the machine, it should be backup first
.
