Issue:
When I get to the "Welcome to setup" screen, I choose "R" but get the same
message ... no disks found; F3 Exit.
This might happen if your system has SATA drives and a controller that is
set to AHCI mode and requires drivers.
Boot to the BIOS, look for the drive controller settings, and set it to
Legacy. Save, reboot, and the drives should be seen.
After you're done, reverse the setting.

How do I get around this to fix the MBR?

Compag Satellite Pro
WinXP SP2
Issue: when booting, windows XP welcome screen, then a quick flash
of BSD the infinite reboot. Will not come up in safe or last know
good configuration. I was told that the machine waws virus infected.
(How can I freeze the screen during boot - keys?)
Norton Ghost can CHKDSK and found no problems. I have tried to
"restore" WinXP from install disk but it says it cannot find any
disks during startup.
From Norton Ghost I copied MBR and a text message buried in the
binary says - "Invalid partition table error loading operating
system Missing operating system"
How can I restore/repair/replace MBR or partition so I can either
fix or re-format & rebuild.
THX in advance--

John, you can use the Recovery Console which is part of the WinXP
CD. Check here for more Info

John,
And *ignore* the 'dire' warning that will appear and just press enter to
fix the MBR at the relevent stage of the repair - your system will be ok
after.
This is a known 'bug' in the "fixmbr" repair procedure - if you are
unsure, copy the warning message, paste it into google and you will find
the answer.
