For those who are <ahem> younger than me: An acoustic coupler was a
forerunner of the modem. It used a regular telephone. You put the handset
into a specially designed cradle, and a series of beeps and bops
transferred data between computers.

Oh yeah, kicking ass at 1200 Bd!! First communications job I had, we used a
coupler to transmit data from our stores in Baltimore to our headquarters in
Detroit. Punched out a tape first, then called Detroit and ran the tape
back. One hitch in the tape, or dropped connection- start all over. I do NOT
miss those days!

If I lived in a place without broadband I would look for service from my
wireless (cell phone) company. Today's 3G networks can do up to about 2
Mbps, real-world. (Next year's 4G networks will do better.) Wireless 3G is
more expensive than wired broadband, and there are monthly download caps,
but it's still better than satellite service.

If I lived in a place without broadband and without cell phones...well,
everyone lives with their choices.

Since the OP is getting SCREWED on bandwidth and pricing, I did a little
googling for him. He might want to look into this. http://getright.com/

If the program does what it says it does, it should be just what the OP
needs.

Don't download stuff at other times.

I didn't know that 900 kps service was still available, since that was
the typical speed in the early 1970's. Are you still using an acoustic
coupler?

Satellite service isn't great for bandwidth. See their plans at:

http://go.gethughesnet.com/plans.cfm

The OP is probably on the "Home" plan. Just look at their super-high
prices for what low bandwidth they give you. Their highest speed plan
is a third the speed of my cable broadband and at 5 times the cost.
Could be satellite is the only option out on the farm (i.e., no cable,
too far for DSL). Being that far out means we don't hear them screaming
when the vise is closed on their genitals.

The OP should start Googling for a download manager (with scheduling
features).
