Re: Accidently quick Formatted External Hard drive

Well the recovery has finished at last :) Good news is I managed to get back about 95% of what I lost and the rest I still have on cassettes which I can redo into MP3 when i get the time, lost nearly all my CD/Albums but they can always be re done again to.

Of all the three program I used and if you have been following my progress the one I would highly recommend is Recuva for music, TestDisk for pictures and make sure you have a decent back up drive to recover to.

Now to get some rest has been a long week :)

That's a great point about a USB drive but i have time on my side, am using TestDisk now and have managed to recover nearly all my pictures but it says and get this it still has 200 hours to go :( Man that's over a week but i hope it will be worth it in the end. It creates folders and I am just working the folders as they are finished it look like i might get lucky if not i will be a little sad but thats life can always get stuff again :)

Steve

Well "Recuva" has completed it's recovery and sadly the news is not too good :9 It seems that i should have delved into the advanced option to get it to recover folders as well. This looks like it is going to be at least a weeks work.

I managed to get pretty much all my MP3 files that were not in folders and some other software applications but no photos. It seems i will have to go to the advanced options and get it to rebuild the folders and then try again but first i am going to try "TestDisk" done a quick picture scan and it found a load of pictures so now I will run that and see what happens.

It appears to me that "Recuva" does not in basic mode using the wizard manage to get files that are stored in folders, this is imperative to me as I have most of my CD collection in folders was a Professional DJ for 25 years and had transferred my whole collection of music Vinyl and CD's to MP3 files into there own folders each. Still I am optimistic and will keep you all informed :)

Some data recovery software doesn't run that well on USB drives, and you may find that removing the drive from its case and attaching it to internal cabling gives faster results.

Many thx for the replies :)

I had used about half the disk about 500 MB It is a WD 1 TB external USB. I
am also lucky in respect that i got my sister to buy exactly the same drive
in case of an emergency, so i have hooked her drive up to my PC and
recovering to a folder on that. After all is done i can then re copy to my
back up drive again.

I look forward to your follow up
