The name given to me (as sole user and administrator) was :JOHN
I changed it to John Baker
I used the control panel..user accounts functions.
I did try and reset the name the same way, but it didn't change my
inability to access the register.
I also recently set up another account on the same machine (with
administrator priviledges) and that worked for installing office!
However I dont want to run two accounts on here, hence I want to
recover my ability on the first account.
The error message generates a lot of hits with a Google search and
they all point back to a defective MS Office installation. It was
either installed wrong or mysteriously quit working (and quite
suddenly).
I can't find a solution that makes good sense, and I looked. They are
too old, network installs, wrong OS, or no solution or an unpleasant
solution - like trash you user account and recreate it. Maybe that is
okay for you since you are reinstalling anyway and you know a new user
account works.
I suspect the local user registry (HKCU) for your user name is broken
but can't find the quick fix.
You might be better served by trying an Office 2000 group. Chances
are they have seen this one before.
Maybe someone else has another idea by now.

Thanks for yur efforts. I too did a google, but got no helpful
responses. U have never run into this before, but there is always a
first time!
