In our factory everyone uses Outlook Express and everyone has the same
settings.
One user's account (five years old no problems) is unable to send.
This started two weeks ago. The message is : the server rejected the
senders email address. and a few lines after the 550 error ; Port 25.
All our workstations are configured exactly. What I did for Margo
after applying all suggestions from HostGator's tech people with
'fixes' was to take a new computer, fresh out of the box; Install
windows 2000 ; apply the patches ; and configured outlook express with
Margo's account.
Thus I have a new computer, new OE account, and for two days I could
send a few test emails. Then suddenly, on day three of my testing, I
couldn't send (on this test computer). I got the same cryptic errors:
server reject; 550 error.
I don't know how to fix this and our internet provider HostGator is
unable to correct this defect.
Now I have Margo who is very dependent with OE for client
communications and her frustration is very aggressive. Let me know if
there is a cure. Thanks John Marshall
Try setting up an alternate mail client with identical settings, such as
Thunderbird. If you get the same errors, it is possible for this to be
caused by anti-virus software; but it's also possible that you are running
into Port25 filtering, intended to block mail relays.
Who is the actual network provider?
When the system is in a state that generates the error, what happens if you
attempt to telnet to the SMTP server?

If you get the Server Reject message with this technique, it's got nothing
to do with the mail client.
You mention both HostGator and Port 25; if HostGator isn't your internet
access provider, ask them if they offer SMTP on another port, such as 587.
Switch the port and any relevant SSL/authentication settings on that
account.
