The product key is only needed if you have purchased SMART hardware.
NOTE: If you don't obtain a product key, you can use SMART Notebook 10 for
30 days.
I simply want to use the Notebook software for the 30 day trial because my
school (I'm a teacher) is looking into purchasing some of the SMART products
for our school and I wanted to see what I could do on the Notebook software
and bring it to school...our school board has a licence for the software
already for school computers.
When I googled Error 1402 I found of website
(http://www.wissamidrissi.com/2008/02/error-1402-could-not-open-key-solution.html)
that said to run "regedit" and under the permissions, add "everyone". I did
that, but the error messages came up again, only this time they said: "Error
1406.Could not write value IsLanguage Configurable to key\Software\SMART
Technologies\Language.Setup\SPU"
I'm about ready to give up...I'm getting into areas that I really don't
understand what I'm doing and why, and what I am doing doesn't seem to be
getting me anywhere.

Are you entering the key during the install process ?

I had been running from the website, so I just tried it again by saving and
then installing, and the same error messages come up. Because I closed my
browser before I ran the rdSP4NBSP1SetupWrapper.exe, I saw the icon come up
on my desktop, but once the "Error 1402" message came up, it went away.

The download of the Notebook software from the Smarttech website goes
fine...once the download is complete, the Windows Installation wizard comes
up...when I click "install", it starts. The window reads "Please wait while
Windows configures Notebook software". Once it reaches the 0 seconds
remaining, a window opens with the yellow triangle with the exclamation mark,
and this is what is reads:
"Error 1402.Could not open key:
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\SMART Technologies\Language Setup. Verify that
you have sufficient access to that key, or contact your support personnel."
I click OK, that window goes away, and it puts a green checkmark next to
"Installing Notebook software". Then it starts installing the SMART board
drivers. Again, as it reaches the 0 seconds remaining, the same window with
the yellow triangle pops up and reads:
"Error 1402.Could not open key:
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\Smart Technologies\Calligrapher Setup. Verify
that you have sufficient access to that key, or contact your support
personnel."
It then puts a green a green checkmark next to "Installing SMART board
drivers" and tells me "Installation is complete". When I put a checkmark in
the box next to "Run the program" and click "Finish", another window opens:
RUNDLL
Error loading C:\Program Files\SMART Technologies\Notebook
software\VistaLib32.dll
The specified module could not be found."
I'm following the exact same procedure my vice-principal followed to get the
trial version on her laptop, and it worked for her. I checked the system
requirements before I downloaded it , and it stated that "Windows 2000, XP,
or Vista" was required. The software loaded and is usable for her, and we
are both running Windows XP.

I've tried to download a trial version of Notebook software 10...during the
installation two error messages popped up regarding a problem with "key"
something...when I try to open the start-up file from the prefetch folder, it
states that windows needs to know what program created it. It is a .pf file.
When I click on "use the web service to find the appropriate program", it
lists several sites that want to charge me a registration fee to fix the
problem...seeing as it is just a trial version of the software, is there any
way I can fix this without paying for a fix?
Why are you " try to open the start-up file from the prefetch folder "
?
