There is a difference. When a machine is running right the "System
Idle Process" usage doesn't add to the CPU usage at the bottom of the
task manager window. But when it is acting as described above the
"System Idle Process" usage does add to the total and will hog all
your resources and bog your machine. I and others are trying to find
a cure, not something stupid like "break out a dictionary" as was
suggested.

Break out a dictionary and look up the word "idle," sometime.

The "System Idle Process" metric is the amount/percentage of time
that
your CPU has nothing to do. A reading of 98-99% is generally
considered a good thing, and readings above 90% are normal. Think of
it like a car's engine idling in your driveway before you place the
car in gear.

Neither DSV nor Bob D., who seems to be the OPs here, said anything about
System Idle adding to the "CPU usage" at the bottom of Task Manager, nor
about resources being hogged nor about a bogged-down machine - sounds like
"I [you] and others" needs splitting out.
A high System Idle % is good. What are the highest and second highest %'s in
the CPU column in your Task Manager? And the total CPU Usage at the bottom?
If your System Idle process IS adding to the reported total then you'll be
running flat out at 100% all the time. If you have that symptom, you should
start your own thread - it's totally different to the two you're responding
to.
BTW, are you sure you're not confusing the "System Idle" with the "System"
process? It happens a lot.
