Yes I know it would have been benificial to other people if I posted
some technical/hardware specs along with the problem.
The reason I had to install auxilary/Sata drivers was because the
original windows xp cd does not have sata drivers included and
consequently from a previous experience does not install onto a SATA
HD, at least not so it can be accessed.
The actual drives I put on the floppy disc were Intel ICH7 through
to ICH 10 Raid, and the handbook for the Asus PQ5 Pro says to choose
the ICH10 during the install.
So for me it was a case of no install without a floppy and SATA
raid drivers, to having a successful install with them. I know it
worked, but I suppose I am a puzzled as you are.
The BIOS settings are presently for a non-Raid setup, and I have not
changed anything in the BIOS regarding RAID, so the default setting
is mostly in use on the motherboard.
Actaully, at this point I have my WinXP system working almost as I
want it, so it is further on so to speak than the install on the
PATA HD.
There were never any personal data nor programs on the PATA HD
because that was a fresh install too, re my initial post. As I said
I had a major problem due to a virus or something and it meant
having to format the SATA HD, and start over.
When I said 'I don't know what impact it will have' I meant in the
sense of RAID, not that I want that.
You see I have no idea what Intel ICH10 Raid is, all I know I need
the sata drivers to install my winxp onto a SATA HD.
If/when I install a 2nd SAT HD, I may or may not use it in a RAID
situation, but I know that if I do it will have to be an identical
HD as the one I already have.
I have now installed all the required drivers for my hardware, and
in the process of installing some programs.
Thanks again

Since you have indicated that you are not using a RAID configuration
there is (was) no need to install the ICH10R RAID/AHCI driver. The
system will have no problem detecting a SATA HDD since the necessary
SATA controller driver is, for all practical purposes, included with
the Intel chipset which presumably you've installed from the
motherboard's installation CD.
On the other hand there is no problem should you install that
auxiliary SATA RAID driver as you did. Since you're contemplating a
future RAID configuration you would need to install that auxiliary
driver.
If & when the time comes where you will be installing a RAID
configuration ensure that you carefully read your ASUS user guide re
installing such. While it is not exactly "rocket science" to
successfully achieve that configuration, it can be a bit tricky
selecting the appropriate BIOS settings & such with that type of
configuration.

Hi Anna,
so if I didn't need to install the ICH10R driver,
which/what one should I have installed to get the basic/original, no
sp2 or 3, winxp cd to install on a SATA HD?
Thanks

Again, assuming a non-RAID HDD configuration, the Intel ICH10R storage
controller (an integral component of the motherboard) would allow the
XP OS to detect the SATA HDD without the necessity of installing an
auxiliary SATA controller driver. My previous comment (above) was
somewhat misleading in this regard since you would be installing the
motherboard drivers from the MB's installation CD *following* the
initial boot to the system. So, as a practical matter, since you
basically had a working system to begin with, you could simply go ahead
and install the XP OS onto a SATA HDD as you would with a PATA HDD.
The fact that the XP OS that you fresh-installed did not contain a SP
should have no bearing on the SATA HDD recognition by the XP OS in this
instance. Presumably you would install SP2 or (preferably) SP3 ASAP. As
a general proposition we prefer to install an XP OS using a
"slipstreamed" XP installation CD that contains SP3 and *then* install
the motherboard drivers.

Anna, if you read my initial post on this subject you will see that I
had in fact already tried a slipsteamed XP install, but it failed on the
error message a I stated. This was the second time I have had this same
problem, and after googling it, it seems the problem is down to a dirty
cd. Its strange that it happened both with sp2 and sp3 slipstreamed into
the original xp files on 2 different makes of cd.
Actually I alway install the motherboard drivers as soon as I have
installed the OS.
Thanks

The issue, (at least as best I understand it), is whether your XP OS will
detect a SATA HDD when you are attempting a fresh-install of the XP onto
that HDD.
All I can tell you is that I've worked with that Intel board (as well as
another variation of that board) and there is no need to install an
auxiliary SATA controller driver through the F6 routine during the OS
setup process in order for the XP OS to detect a SATA HDD. Again, we're
talking about a non-RAID configuration.
The (in effect) integrated Intel SATA controller driver is sufficient for
the OS to detect the HDD. As such, the default BIOS settings as related
to the SATA HDD are likewise sufficient for SATA HDD recognition by the
OS.
I find it hard to believe that this non-recognition of the SATA HDD
problem you're experiencing is due to a "dirty" XP installation CD.
Perhaps you can give it another try with your original XP OS installation
CD and not use the slipstreamed versions.

Hi Anna,
ok, I understand what you are saying and whish it was like
that, but what I'll do is to try to install the original xp OS onto
another partition and see how it goes.
I also find it hard to believe about dirty cds with a slipstreamed
install, but that is what I found out when I googled the problem, that
being the install fails at trying to load/install the asms files. the said
folder and file(s) are there on the cd, but the installation can't seem to
find them. So you tell me.
Thanks
Bob:
I learned long ago that in this business *anything* is possible. However I
can't tell you how many users I've encountered over the years who attributed
whatever problem they were experiencing to a defective/corrupt/damaged CD.
We invariably determined in virtually every case that that was *not* the
problem. But having said that it *is* possible a "bad" CD is at the root of
your problem. I just can't tell from this distance.
If it's possible for you to obtain another XP OS installation CD from a
friend or some source that matches your version of the OS, then you could
give that a try.
Anna
