To those who suggested I might have a bad cable, you were right. I never
imagined that could possibly be the problem and neither did the "experts" I
paid to help me. I purchased a parallel with a usb connection on one end,
the computer detected it immediately and I am up and running. Thank you all
for responding. I am grateful to you.

Does this printer connected only to this machine or shared with other
machines?
What Tray did you select for the paper to use and did you set the printer as
default?
Do you have another printer software installed on this machine?
Did you tried this printer on another machine and see if this machine will
print okay to determine if it is windows issue or Printer configurations
issue?
Here are some info from HP site:
1. The file sent to the printer may be corrupted. Try sending a
different print job.
2. The printer itself may not be working correctly. (Verify that a
Self-Test page prints correctly to eliminate this possible explanation.)
3. The data cable may be defective. (Use a different cable if
printing through a parallel connection. If connected to a network, ensure
that the hub connection is functioning properly.
4. The correct printer port may not be selected, for example, if the
printer is set to a network port when the hardware port being used by the
printer is actually LPT1.
5. The printer port may not be configured correctly, for example,
using current lpt.vxd and a standard printer port.
6. The printer driver may be corrupted. (Printing to a file from the
print dialogue box and then copying the file from DOS to the printer will
help determine if this is the correct explanation for unexpected printer
output.)
7. The application being used may be sending a notification header
that appears on the printer display.

Try a diffrent cable to connect this printer from serial to parallel cable.
