Re: Cannot get my icons to stay

Why not? You need to set "Show hidden files and folders" for that folder as
I detailed earlier. Otherwise you won't see the file IconCache.db to be able
to delete it.

Changing that setting, which you can change straight back, won't mess
anything up - unless perhaps you've got other, more serious, underlying
issues with your system already. And even then, I don't think it will do any
harm. Each to his own, and the insides of Windows can be an intimidating
place; but if you're not willing to try third-party tools nor even a simple
step like unhiding hidden files, I'm not really sure why you posted here...!

No, Besides, if I start messing around with the Username settings, then
the issue that I had previously, could return; That issue being, that the
PC would not enter straight into Windows.

Did you unhide the contents of that folder? ("<username>" is supposed to
be replaced with your own logon name...)

Sorry, nothing is coming up as IconCache.db. This, despite performing a
search.

No offence taken nor disrespect inferred - if only all posters were as
polite as you!

You're wise not to dabble in the registry if unsure what you're doing -
it is, indeed, easy to mess one's computer up appallingly. Good luck to
you and your computer chap!

What's strange is that your desktop is rearranged upon *every* log on.
I've found that the need for the tool I've advocated is only
occasional, when Windows decides to shove all icons over to the left.
Are you sure that perhaps there isn't some application already
installed and running in the background that's managing icon layout? Or
perhaps, if you're on a network, some sort of policy implemented by IT
Central on to your machine?

Maybe you could try creating a temporary new logon and see if the same
happens for that. Or, try deleting the file IconCache.db in
C:\Documents and Settings\<username>\Local Settings\Application Data
and let it recreate itself. (It's a hidden file, so if needs be enable
viewing those - in Windows Explorer, Tools > Folder Options > "View"
tab > "Show hidden files and folders").

No disrespect. I remain reluctant to mess around with the registry
settings because in doing so, I could risk malfunctioning my computer.
This because I know little about the register where all files or their
extensions are stored.

Also no disrespect about the file sent earlier. If the chap who fixes
my computer says it's fine to download, then I will go ahead. Then
with hope, will fix the problem that I'm having right now.

Mean well by the above and no offence caused whatever.

The "Icon Restore" utility I pointed you to contains two files:

layout.dll - which you can grab off of a copy of the NT4 Resource
Kit, if you can find one. Goes into your system32 directory.
layout.reg - which says this:

==================
REGEDIT4

[HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\CLSID\{19F500E0-9964-11cf-B63D-08002B317C03}]
@="Desktop Icon Layout"
[HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\CLSID\{19F500E0-9964-11cf-B63D-08002B317C03}\InProcServer32]
@="Layout.dll"
"ThreadingModel"="Apartment"

[HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\Folder\shellex\ContextMenuHandlers\IconLayout]
@="{19F500E0-9964-11cf-B63D-08002B317C03}"

[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Shell
Extensions\Approved]
"{19F500E0-9964-11cf-B63D-08002B317C03}"="Desktop Icon Layout"
==================

so you *could* try this fix without downloading anything from the
Internet. Oh, except this message of course... whoops, too late!

AFAIK this has been an intractable bug since Windows 95. If you've
tried playing around with Desktop > Properties settings, you may just
have to give in on this one and download something.

Like I said, I've tried all the options I can in the 'Arrange icons'
menu and yet still, the icons revert to the left of the screen.
Unfortunately and no disrespect here, I remain unwilling to download
anything from the Internet that may help resolve this issue. So any
further alternatives that I could try without downloading anything
would remain appreciated.

Thanks

Currently, I have 5 icons on my desktop. Usually, I have many more
and like to arrange these around to my preference. For example and
let's say for argument's sake, in the middle of the desktop
screen.

Coming to the point. What happens next is, whenever I re-enter
windows the icons revert to their default positions. Or, putting a
finer point. To the top left of the screen.

Is there any way in rectifying this issue? None of the commands in
Arrange icons by....solves the issue encountered.

Thanks

Michael

Have you done the following:

RIGHT-click on an open area on the desktop and:
click Arrange Icons By, and then remove the tick at AutoArrange,
and
click Arrange Icons By, and then remove the tick from Align to
grid.

Usually that's all that's needed. BTW, do not un-tick Show Icons
on Desktop or you will have a blank desktop with no icons. But you
can put it back easy enough by repeating the process & putting the
tick mark back.

Cheers,

Twayne
