A friend had me come over to her place and asked me to look at her
computer. She uses XP and was typing in MS Works word processing
document. All of a sudden the keyboard stopped working and the number
lock light was on but the mouse worked. I hooked up another keyboard
and the same thing as in dead. I restarted held down F10 and went into
the Bios and saw an Error 0210: Stuck Key 44. But I was able to move
around the screen and do things with the keyboard so it can’t be dead..
Is the Error of the stuck key just showing that I had held down F10 or
is there a mapping of the keyboard were I can figure out which key is
44?
She got this computer when XP was sort of new. They did not give her
an XP installer CD. Instead the HP manual tells you to run in HP Tools
(forgot exact name) a restore application. I ran it and did a
reinstall of the keyboard driver. Still not able to input using the
keyboard.
When she bought the computer they said all the OS installation stuff
was on the hard drive and no installer CD was needed. As another
question here doesn’t she deserve for just a shipping fee the actual
windows XP CD because obviously she bought the HP desktop computer
alone with a license to run XP?

Microsoft only requires a method of placing a working XP version back
onto a PC. Several OEM PC makers are shipping an OS recovery system,
which is an image of the hard drive at the time the PC left their
factory.

As for the keyboard problem, you may need to do a BIOS / CMOS "clear"
in order to attempt to force the "keyboard" to be recognised. Once
the BIOS "clear" is completed, you will need to re-enter all the
settings (Date/Time, Hard drive size etc..) and then access the XP's
Safe Mode. Once in the Safe Mode, you can test the keyboard.

Ok two follow up questions.
Are there online directions as to how to clear the Bois? Is this
something the can or does happen much? Could it be something to do
with the control panel (not sure because I use a Mac) that helps
handicapped people use the computer? I only hit the keys fast never
thought to hold them for a longer bit.
And second is that disk image of XP able to be copied for future use
on a CD? Is it invisible and where would it reside on the hard drive.
What would a person do if they wanted or needed to put a new hard
drive in because the old one died or they wanted more room?
If the latter could you put the new one in as a slave to copy (?) the
old hard drive over then reinstall as the master and remove and trash
the old hard drive.
So is there be a way to get an installer CD from Microsoft because the
version is too old for them being XP and an early copy I assume it’s a
home edition? Isn't being a licensed user a licensed user no matter if
you have the CD or not?
