I have no idea why it uses so much CPU. I am a fairly competent

and can safely delve into the registry, for example, but am far from

Perhaps you could use Virtual Machine and install Win98se which will
probably run that program just fine.
You can Google on how to make Virtual Machine.
PS: Hopefully someone will have a simpler answer.
