I urgently need to replace my original laptop hardrive that was running XP

The laptop is a Compaq NX9005 which has been very reliable for over 4 years.
I recently gave it to my daughter who after 2 months of use has had disk
failure ( I have just been told) While I was away she sought the help of a
friend who is into computers and fitted a replacement small drive of 10GB
with W/XP Home to help her with important work at the time. The disk, which
was working perfectly well, has now been removed and I am replacing it with a
spare 40gb that I had in good working order. (Has been formatted and
error-ckecked via USB cable connected to my desktop) ,After installing and
running XP Pro from the original CD that did come with the laptop, all the
initial files load up OK but when it gets to the page "Set up is installing
your W/XP" it hangs and none of the commands, Continue, Repair or F3 respond.
What is stopping Windows loading on to the new disk?
Any advise will be much appreciated.

I have experienced some problems with Compaq systems. Some Compaqs
that I worked on will not accept a hard drive that does not seem to
have some type of Compaq "tweak" setting. That is to say, if you add
a "generic" hard drive purchased not from HP/Compaq, there might be a
chance that it might not work since the hard drive electronics do not
have a "Compaq" based firmware.

You might be able to fix this with a "BIOS" update.
