True. However, I have Automatic Updates set to Notify me but not to
Download and Install. Also I use Custom and not Express. These
measures put the User in charge. That's the way it should. It
requires a little more effort but I prefer knowing what is being
installed. ~

BobThanks - A Microsoft did contact me within about 6 hours.
The update was offered to me as a Hardware Optional Update. Seeing
the words Touch Screen Update I ignored offer as I do not have
that facility. It did not refer to Touchpad. There are a number
reports of the havoc caused when it was installed. Refreshing my
Windows Update earlier the Hardware Optional Update has been
withdrawn. Small comfort but it would appear that Microsoft has
reacted to
the problems.

Sometimes you need to manually identify and remove the .infThanks - but you fix did not work for me. I have contacted
file from the windows\inf folder. This will stop the driver
from self-reinstalling every
reboot.
To identify the culprit, list the .infs by date of creation, or
search the
folder for files containing a recognisable string such as
'Ideacom' "David B." wrote:

"You are not alone.
All computers I am responsible for with PS2 mice have failed
after installing the IdeaCom driver.
Our fix has been to remove the driver (in XP-
\windows\system32\drivers) then uninstall it from HID in
device manager. A reboot will cause the OS to reload the
original driver. Note that you must remove the driver before
the reboot, or the
bad driver
will reload and you will be right back to where you started.
FYI - We had to use a USB based mouse to get around until this
was done. USB
mice still work after the update.
Also, this is the fix that has worked for us (about 18
computers) and is not
official. We are still waiting to see what Microsoft is going
to do about
it. Until then we have issued an alert to our customers NOT
do any updates."

This isn't news, the consensus is to almost never installYes - it won't work !
driver updates
from Windows update on XP. Have you tried a driver rollback
from device
manager?

I updated Windows XP Professional, on my Dell Inspiron 8200
laptop, with
an Optional update for the touchpad.
It was an Ideacom driver. Now the touchpad does not work
and there is
no way to uninstall it.
I had to use a usb mouse to get it going but have still not
found a way
to unstill the #@#* thing.
I tried to reinstall the origional Dell driver but it won't
install. Any ideas?
Microsoft.
Here is the fix.
http://techrepublic.com.com/5208-7343-0.html?forumID=102&threadID=283189&start=0
Look for the oem**.inf file which was created on Dec 11. 2008
6.14.56am. I just put it in another folder so XP couldn't find
it and deleted the device from the device manager as per the
instructions.
I sent an email back with the fix I used but haven't received a
reply as yet.
From searching Google - the IdeaCom Technology update has caused
havoc to a lot of computer users.
I hope Microsoft have learnt a lesson from this mess.
