Computer keeps restarting

I have a problem with one of my systems. It's XP Home SP3 system.
I was in safe mode trying to do a disk cleanup and defrag. It wouldn't
allow me to do a defrag though until I'd run chkdsk on drive c.
When I tried to run chkdsk it wouldn't let me it came up with a
message saying that certain folders were already being used by another
resource.
It did however give me the option to run it on restart so I selected
that and to auto fix any errors and to try and repair bad sectors.
It ran when I rebooted and then windows loaded up again in safe mode.
I then tried to use the defrag and it came up with another error
message saying that chkdsk was scheduled to run on restart and that I
should run chkdsk. Even though I already had!
So I just restarted the computer again to see if either chkdsk would
run again or if the computer would start as normal.
It did neither. It now just keeps coming up with a black screen giving
me the option of starting windows normally, in safe mode, in safe mode
with command prompt, networking etc or to restore to last known good
state. It is selected on normal start up and has the 30 second count
down thingy.
The only trouble is whichever option I select it keeps restarting and
coming back to the same screen and nothing I select makes any
difference the computer fails to boot.
Before that happens a funny list comes up on the black screen listing
windows folder locations.
I am thinking that the chkdsk that ran the first time has messed with
things in those windows folders which is now preventing windows from
booting? Does this sound like I'm on the right lines?
If so I am going to need to download a boot disk. Can anyone point me
in the direction of what I'll need to do to get a slipstreamed Win XP
Home SP3 bootdisc? I have created a SP2 slipstreamed disc a number of
years ago for an XP Pro OS, I believe it may have been nlite that I
used to create it.
My only major trouble is that its a Fujitsu Siemens Scaleo P system
that came with XP Home SP1 and has since been updated to SP3. The
computer never came with a Windows CD it was pre-installed and all the
files for the CD are actually on a folder on the hard drive that I
can't get to as it wont boot up. Plus I can't find the instruction
book that came with this PC or the CD containing the drivers, and I'm
sure the product key for windows is in one of the instruction book so
I think this means I can't do a repair install doesn't it? Doh!
Do I try using downloaded xp home sp1 or sp2 boot disks to get into
the system and then I have to update again to SP3? Or would this cause
problems? I don't want to lose any of my data on this pc. Would this
fix the errors with the windows folder and boot sector?
Thanks for your help,
John
