I ran Belarc to check for any missing security fixes. All required
security hotfixes (using the 12/17/2008 Microsoft Security Bulletin
Summary) have been installed.

However, Belarc indicates that about 7 of these hotfixes need to be
reinstalled. Problem is, I deleted all the uninstallers and the
hotfix won't install over the previous hotfix-gone-bad.

Is there a way to get a specific hotfixe to reinstall without
uninstalling it first? What if I rename or delete the .log file in
the Windows folder... will that work?

Thanks for you help.

If you visit http://windowsupdate.microsoft.com/ and do a custom
scan for updates - do those updates show in the High Priority
updates as needing to be installed?

If not - high probability cance that Belarc is wrong.

What patches are you being told you need (list them by KB article
numbers, please)?

Because of previous issues, I haven't used WU in quite some time
with XP.

I recently read about someone having the same issue. They were
advised to uninstall the particualr hotfix and reinstall it. Upon
doing so, the problem was fixed.

Of course, I can't uninstall them, because I deleted the uninstall
folders before I knew I had this isse. I may try renaming the .log
file for the hotfixes and then try reinstalling.

I have an older laptop which may have the uninstall folders for
these hotfixes. But, I'm not confident that they would be identical
to the ones I deleted, due to the difference in hardware and
installed software. I don't really know. But, it might be worth a
try if nothing else works.

There is nothing wrong with using Windows Updates in its many forms
(Automatic (fully, download & notify, just notify) or through the web page
given earlier. Works great - with the latter three giving more control to
the end-user. If yours is giving you trouble - i suggest:

As many will tell you - ignore the title and symptoms listed in the article
referred to. Do method 1 and 2 and see if it fixes your issue whether or
not you repaired anything.

http://support.microsoft.com/kb/943144
Perform method 1 and method 2 and try to update*.

*try to update:
- Visit http://windowsupdate.microsoft.com/
- If it asks you to install anything before you see a selection of "Custom"
or "Express" - do so.
- Once you see the "Custom" or "Express" selection, choose "Custom".
- Scan for updates.
- When it lists what it finds - install the High Priority ones.
- You are generally safe doing the Optional Software Updates
(although I would not put Windows Search on anything.) I
suggest avoiding the Optional Hardware Updates completely.

After you have 'fixed' (or at least cleaned up) your updating mechanism, you
can consider the manual method of installing said updates...

You know the KB #'s - why couldn't you download them and install them each
manually?

http://support.microsoft.com/kb/######
(Fill in the ###### appropriately.)

Look for the download and/or the section ofr "IT professionals" and follow
that link. You should be able to download the installation file for each of
the updates individually and use those to install.

I could give a long list of reasons not to enable the Windows Update
service, not the least of which is that Microsoft has demonstrated in
the past that they can't be trusted with regard to that service.
Belarc has proven to be quite reliable over the years in helping me
keep up to date with security patches. If I can't work it out
manually, then I will simply live with the failed patches.

I have all the patch files, but just running the file doesn't fix the
problem. I also tried renaming the kbxxxxxxx.log file before
re-running the patch, but it didn't correct the problem.
