Mark,
I'm trying different ways to localise the error. I checked for any yellow
alarms on the Device Manager but nothing there unfortunately, so can't track
down.
Also, from the cmd prompt I did the following:
ipconfig /all
tasklist /svc
I have a printscreen of the list of services, etc. Dunno how to attach it
here in this newsgroup. I can send it by email if you want.
Thanks in advance for all your help,
Christine

No, I don't think it would have deleted without notice. Something has.
altered your registry from the default. If Services.MSC fails to offer a
start/stop option, I would be thinking about System Restore or some
previously made backup option. Removing any updates would not restore the
registry.

Hi Mark,
Thank you for the prompt reply. Following your advice, I checked the
knowledgebase article that you mentioned and carefully checked in the
registry for the keys and parameters. However, it did not work.
On closer inspection, I find that in the registry the different entries
for
the missing services are also missing. For e.g. I don't find the following
entries:
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Services\Netman
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Services\CryptSvc
Do you think these entries could have been altogether deleted by a recent
antivirus update - I am using McAfee AOL edition.
Thanks in advance,
Christine

This problem is also seen in Vista with certain anti-virus running. You
are
not getting access to services due to the inability of the system to set
the
correct Permissions in the registry. Each of those services can be set by
you manually, as shown for the firewall service, in this article.
Some services do not start in Windows Vista:

Hello all,
I am using Win XP Pro on my laptop with SP2 & SP3 well installed. 2
weeks
ago, I had some update installed automatically (configured like that),
which
made a restart of the computer. Ever since then, I cannot connect to a
network - WLAN (802.11g) or LAN (Ethernet).
I have tried without success the following:
1. Network connections services don't start so the list of network
connections is also blank. When I try to locate the network connections
services from the list of Windows services, I can't even find it. Some
other
services I can't find are Windows Help service and Cryptographic
service.
2. I checked in hardware if there were any changes to network drivers,
there
is none. I have desactivated and reinstalled the WLAN & Ethernet
drivers.
Still I cannot do the above in 1.
3. When I plug the Ethernet cable to my LAN router, the router detects
it
(corresponding LED glows) but my laptop cannot detect a network
connection.
4. I tried to re-install the SP3 package but after unpacking the
installation does not run as it cannot detect the authenticity of the
software. Cause: The Cryptographic service is not running.
5. USB plug-and-play works. I can connect 3rd party storage devices
(whose
drivers were already installed), and printers by USB and they work
normally.
6. I uninstalled all the critical windows updates that were installed
on
the
date of this malfunction and still the problem remains.
7. Tried to do system restoration which failed giving a simple error
message
(without any details or explanations).
8. Tried all the above using Windows Safe Mode (except step 5).
Also, I am using McAfee Antivirus AOL free edition.
Any help or suggestion you provide would be appreciated.
Thanks in advance,
Christine
