The CD repair (like you said) should be my best bet. Like I said, I'm going to have everything 'wiped clean' from my system. This, in preparation to upgrading to a dual core processor.
Then the "repair" is moot.
Now since reading your post, there does not appear to be a repair option on the XP CD that I have to hand. If this is on the CD, then should be pleased if you could tell me the whereabouts of this feature.
Well, if you're going to be performing a clean installation, the method for performing a repair installation is moot. Nevertheless:
How to Perform a Windows XP Repair Install

Also, because I could not extract (from the CD) components such as Word ....
Neither the Microsoft Office application suite, nor any of its individual component applications (Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Access, Outlook, etc.), have _ever_ been "part" of *any* Windows operating system. They are, and always have been, separate applications, that must be purchased and installed separately. Microsoft Office comes pre-installed on new computers only when the computer manufacturer chooses to offer it, and the purchaser is willing to pay extra for it.
.... and Paint for example, that I am wondering if the repair feature would cure this issue too.
A repair installation would restore Paint, which is a component of the OS, but not Word.
