Lose of mouse and keyboard action due to XP start up FAT check

Attempt to rebuild from XP installation CD was a failure; not able to key in
required code to proceed with installation; Safe Mode blocked because of
incomplete installation.
How can I restore the XP installation to the operational state existing
before the failures ?
