Re: I screwd up. Please help

Tech-Archive recommends: Fix windows errors by optimizing your registry

Which option did you choose?

I don't remember. I choose the one option that would not be a complete
reinstall of the O.S.

Are you ready to start from scratch again?

If that is what it takes. I have backed up all the important stuff,
but I will go over everything again to make sure.

Was all of your data, important stuff backed up?

No. However, I was able to get a lot back doing a "search" and have
been able to restore things that were no on the desktop, but the
search said they were. Since then, I have backed up everything
important to me.

Have you learned a lesson regarding free cleanup utilities?

You know it.

What was the name of the uninstaller, just so others can be warned?

I really wish I knew. When I tried to boot up again, something it said
I should do (I think) the problems started and everything in my
Thunderbird e-mail was erased. Damn, I should have known better.

I assume "Last known Good Configuration" is no help either then? Ahh,
well:

Chalk it up to a good learning experience & don't beat yourself up too
badly. Coupla clouts across the noggin should be enough<g>.
Let its main lesson be to make backups and keep them current all the
time. Once you're up and running again, look into imaging software like
Symantec's Norton Ghost or Acronis True Image. Next time something lke
this happens, or a disk crashes, whatever (it WILL happen again),
you'll absolutely love the fact that you just pop in a CD, click a few
things, and voila it all comes back to just like it was yesterday, or
whenever you did the last incremental backup or full backup.
Well ... maybe the main lesson is better to be never download
software from unknown sites, THEN the backup stuff. Noo, the backup
stuff first! Then if you screw up again, you at least can recover from
it without all the hassle you're about to go thru! CAll it a tie<g>!
This is a great time to do the backup research while it's still
important to you. You'll find their forums very helpful, too. I use
Ghost but most people seem to use True Image. They're both excellent
applications.
