Boy, I can't win for losing. I did something that in retrospect
appears... well... stupid. When I was coping the user data from the old
drive to backup, I got quite a few mis-starts. The system kept saying
"cannot copy" x for different reasons. Some issues were passwords, some
were crc check failures in transfer. After it found an error the system
would just stop copying. You wouldn't have a clue where it stopped.
(Remember in WinXP home, to copy data from a ntfs file you have to be in
safe mode, and the screen resolution is terrible. ) Point is, when you
are COPYING lots of files and directory trees in bad resolution windows
explorer, you can easily go crazy. What's my answer? Heck with it..
just cut / paste (i.e. move, not copy) the files and directories of
interest. That way when you crash in the middle of a move you know
exactly where you are, and whats been moved and what's not been moved.
At that time, I also did expect my foray in to product key recovery to
be successful.
After I finished copying all of the user data (successfully!) I did
want to see what virus' were on that hard drive. I did scan the drive
while it was installed in a different computer and found 12 infected
files, previously discovered via Hijack-this.. and seven corrupted files
in Windows directories that had NOT been discovered. I said... I have
an idea.. I will rename the seven files from xxxx.dll to xxxx.dllold,
reboot and see what happens. Perhaps I can then use product key tool on
an operating system. Cool huh? Guess what. The computer now boots.
to a graphical window. Yup, I have a blue window with a white cursor
arrow. A real window, not the Blue Screen of Death. Thats it. Blue box
and an arrow. Not a single thing more! You can even move the cursor
around with the mouse. Its stable. Doesn't crash. Arrrghhhh!
Apparently I took off too much data when transfering user stuff to
backup. (The entire documents and settings directory is essentially
empty.) I'm not really sure I want to go back to the other computer
again...
In retrospect, I probalby would have been better off doing a scan of
the drive while it was mounted in the other computer, then do the virus
corrupted file / rename trick.
Question.. Is there any way to go do recovery console and transfer data
to usb flash drive ... (like a copy of ntuser.log)
Hey, wait.. I did notice that the ProduKey tool has the ability to
search for keys on any computer in the local network. In fact when I
look at my local router log, I can see the other computer! Funny thing
is, its listed as DELL_DESKTOP Oops.. that could be a problem, as I
know the box says "eMachine"... After five minutes, ProduKey shows not
a thing... oh well.
Question: Is it possible to load a DELL corporate load and NOT have a
product key in the software?
And hey, lets speak up for doing stupid things.. its how we learn!
(Hmm.. am I learning that Ubuntu Linux is a great operating system? Bite
my tongue.. what am I saying?)
Anyway, thanks for reading! Ideas?
thanx, Zip.
