I haven't let Windows install the current update (XP SP3) even though I
have
always let it do the updates.

Here's my fear: I have always been leery of the auto-updates (I think
once
it trashed a machine totally) and in looking here for another problem I
seem
to have stumbled about posts complaining about the current update.

Anyone have any serious and tangible insight to give on whether to allow
the
update or not?

Many thanks in advance.

SP3 is a good update...
Increased security and all around better performance.

HOWEVER there is no guarantee it will work properly.
Chances are it will be fine...but I'd do a backup of your system first...
best option would be to entirely clone your HD to another
