The current auto-update XP SP3 question

Tech-Archive recommends: Fix windows errors by optimizing your registry

I haven't let Windows install the current update (XP SP3) even though I have
always let it do the updates.

Here's my fear: I have always been leery of the auto-updates (I think once
it trashed a machine totally) and in looking here for another problem I seem
to have stumbled about posts complaining about the current update.

Anyone have any serious and tangible insight to give on whether to allow the
update or not?
