John, which version of Knoppix were you using?
The old one: V3.9
Or, the new one: V5.1.1

Download an ISO file from Knoppix to make a Bootable Live CD to recover
your Data.
Get it from a mirror of your choice on his next page there.
It is about 696MBs compressed.
Boot from it(it uses your RAM and Graphics, but does not install), and copy
your Data to a Flash Drive.
Check to see if you have enough RAM to run it.
Change permissions on FD from read only, so you can copy to it

And above is a good ISO burner.
It is a shell ext; just right-click on the downloaded ISO file>send Image to

machine available to burn the ISO onto a CD with, here's another
tidbit: I have a spanking-new homebuilt pc with SATA hds and SATA
CDROMs. I could NOT get any of my Knoppix CDs to boot, I must have
burned 25 of them (I'm stubborn). Finally someone suggested that
sometimes IDE CDROMs would boot these CDs whereas SATA ones wouldn't.
I happened to have a spare IDE CDROM drive laying around and slapped
it on. Sure enough, it booted. I'd like to edit that Knoppix CD and
add some SATA drivers to it, but it would entail at least another 25
dead CDs before I prevailed, if I ever did, and it seems kinda
daunting.
Hate to be an 'I told you so' he-he, but a much better solution is NOT
to let this happen. Get a good imaging backup system in place. When
you're down for the count just pop in an Acronis CD, restore your
5-day old backup and you're right back on the air.
