I also faced deep directory structures which leads to long paths to
files. Windows XP's explorer does not handle files with names larger
than 255-260 characters. Trying to delete or copy such a file leads to
warnings about not being able to access files - "Path too long". I spent
lots of time on this and finally bought one tool to handle the problem
at http://www.abtollc.com/products.aspx
