Okay, so I did just that. foun an oldstyle 40 pin ribbon and connected my 2
optical drives, one as a master and one as a slave as mentione in my earlier
post, but they still wont read anything. any furthersuggestions? Could it be
a failing controller for the 2nd DE channel? As I've stated, I just updated
the drivers for the mobo (Fatal1ty an8-SLI), and this boardis a little bit
old, maybe it's time to upgrade that too.

Can you please have a look in the device manager and uninstall these devices
then Reboot your machine and see if that will solve some of the problems!
Have a look in the Event Viewer and send us the error messages you will see
there in your next post:
Open a Notepad, customize or minimize to the taskbar as you will need it
later for this step to copy the error message on it.
Open a run command and type in:
eventvwr.msc click [OK] you will get the Event viewer control Panel.
click on each of these:
Application
System
Security
Look in the right Pane/window for error message with red (X) or Yellow
exclamation mark /!\ , double click each one to get more info about the
causer.
On the Event error properties message you will see:
Up Arrow
Down arrow
Two pages
Click on the two pages to copy the error message then bring up the Notepad
you opened earlier and right click on the first line and select Paste from
the list, this will paste the error message on a Notepad.
Please don't duplicate the error message one of each kind will be sufficient.
HOW TO: View and Manage Event Logs in Event Viewer in Windows XP
http://support.microsoft.com/kb/308427/en-us
Please we need just the error messages with Red (X) and don't repeat the
error, just one of each kind and post them back in your next post.

I performed a system restore, and nothing has changed... I uninstalled the 2
optical drives and let windows reinstall them, no change. I even went so far
as to install the new drivers for my mobo and still no change? Could this
mean that I have 2 dead optical drives? They are both on the 2nd IDE channel
by the way... I went through the process of opening the case, taking the
drives out and insuring that 1 drive was the master and the other the
slave... I think I'm just going to bet some new drives, take these 2 out and
beat them with a hammer, and hope for the best after that.
P.S.... you guys that seem to dislike each other should take your show on
the road... I know a couple of folks in Vegas who could get you in a good
venue... maybe Ceasers Palace or something...you should both get it out of
your systems, because you aren't helping anyone with your constant stabs at
each other.
