So today Microsoft shoved a "security update" to Windows XP on me.
Upon rebooting, the machine no longer functions. I get the following
alert:

---------------------------------------------------------
Data Execution Prevention - Microsoft Windows
To help protect your computer, Windows has closed this program.
Name: Windows Explorer
Publisher: Microsoft Corporation

(Close message)

Data Execution Prevention helps protect against damage from viruses and
other security threats. What should I do? (link to useless Help that
ays NOTHING about actually fixing the problem!)
---------------------------------------------------------

I'v rebooted dozens of times, tried booting in Safe Mode, tried using
System Restore to pick a previous restore point -- it always says the
system cannot be restored to a previous point. I've tried disabling
startup items, I've tried going to Add or remove Programs, and I see
there is a "HotFix for Windows XP" and TWELVE (yes, TWELVE!) "Security
Update for Windows XP" listed there that were installed today. Of
course, every last one onf them says "This update cannot be removed."

So, beside driving to Redmond and exploding a bomb, how can I get some
relief to what they've done to me?

God, I HATE Windows sooooooooooooooo much. What an incredible pain in
the ass....
You might have a program installed that is causing the problem .
