Re: Saving Settings Takes Too Long

The ReadMe explains a procedure for tracking which process is causing the slowdown.

I installed it and I notice a UPHC.exe in the processes list. But it
certainly hasn't fixed the problem. There doesn't seem to be a log
file in the UPHClean directory, just a readme and the .exe file. Any
other suggestions? I do have Service Pack 3 installed. I close all
open windows at shutdown time but I leave stuff in the status bar,
like the anti-virus software, open. Thanks.

A registry doesn't need cleaning and certainly not "scrubbing". That won't solve your problem but it can create lots of new problems.

What you are experiencing is common and probably the result of applications not allowing Windows to shut down properly.

You do close all open applications before shutting down, right?

You are 100% free of any form of malware, correct?

Automatic Updates are not set to install at shutdown, yes?

The User Profile Hive Cleanup Service is an effective work-around:

The included ReadeMe explains the cause in detail and offers a couple of solutions.

Before the shutdown screen there is a blue screen saying that my
settings are being saved. For the past few weeks it has been taking
three minutes or so to finish. What settings could it be saving?
Could it be Firefox3's fault? Usually the shutdown screen, after it,
only takes a few seconds. I've done a registry scrub and installed
CCleaner but they don't help.
