Install Plug and Play without logging in?

The o and l keys started adding odd escape
characters on my Inspiron 2200 this morning.

It appears to be a hardware problem, easily
fixed by using a USB keyboard.

Here's a question, though: if I'm not logged
in, and one of the keys in my password doesn't
work, can I still plug in a USB keyboard?

Assuming the drivers aren't already installed.

I'm wondering if I should go around acquainting
the laptops with USB keyboards ahead of time or
not.
