long filenames shown as 8.3 with tildes after XP3

Hi,
just upgraded to XP3 seemingly successfully. There is a BUT.
My most important application for digital asset management (photos) named
'iView Media Pro' (meanwhile Exression Media by Microsoft) suddenly shows
filenames in the old 8.3 notation.
I went to check the code page conversion tables and found that there are
many entries in the list that I cannot deselect, those are faded out. Those
not faded out I can easily select or deselect.
I guess that these 2 problems got to have something in common. Just what?
How would I be able to restore the freedom of selection for all code pages
conversions?

For example a foldername changed as follows:
03_04 Coyote Buttes North has changed to 03_04C~1 (even spaces got stripped)

and the filename like this:
IMG00234-00246.tif has changed to IMG002~6.tif

This does not happen using the explorer. It happens only with iView Media Pro.

So you might say I should go to another forum, well yes if there were not
the problem with the list of faded itmes in the code page conversion tables.

Any advice and feedbacl is highly appreciated.
