Thanks Ricky,
I tried it and unfortunatly it still told me that access is denied.
I can disable simple file sharing on the client, which is XP pro and get
access to the security tab, but still can't assert ownership of the files
from the client. On the ubuntu server side I am setting the permissions on
the encrypted files to full read and write access for every user, but it
still won't work.
Any other solutions? Is there any way to force a copy command?
cheers

How to take ownership of a file or folder in Windows XP

In XP Home you have to boot in safe mode to see the security tab. In XP Pro
you have to disable simple file sharing.

Hello,
any help with this problem would be greatly appreciated,
background to the problem: My Win XP pro system is refusing to boot up,
giving me an "unmountable boot volume error", probably having been
corrupted
by a botched registry clean. chkdsk /r and fixboot commands in the
recovery
console failed to fix the problem. however, I have managed to gain access
to
my hard disk content using an ubuntu live disk. I've also managed to set
up a
network connection between the faulty system running ubuntu as a server
and
another computer running XP pro as client. I'm trying to backup my files
so
that I can do a clean reinstall of windows on the faulty system.
I have a number of encrypted folders and files (encrypted using the XP pro
EFS encryption option) on the hard disk of the faulty system. I have my
encryption key file at hand, backed up and accessible to me on the client
computer. However, I don't think I ever set up EFS file sharing for the
encrypted folders/files, nor did I designate any recovery agent.
The problem is that whenever I try opening or copying the encrypted files,
whether from within ubuntu on the faulty system, or from the XP client
computer, I get an access denied message. I've tried using the backup
application from the client computer with the hopes of being able to
restore
the files using my encryption key, but I'm still getting the same access
denied message. When I right click on the encrypted files, accessed
through
the network from the client computer, I don't get the option to open the
advanced options to un-encrypt the files...
I do have full access to all the non-encrypted files on the same HD. So it
seems the access denied message is due to the encryption.
Surely, if I have the encryption key, there must be a way to access my
files.
Can anybody give me some pointers?
Many thanks in advance,
Florent Giehmann
