Re: XP now takes over 4 minutes to boot to desktop

Bob

Are there any yellow question marks in Device Manager? Right click on
the My Computer icon on your Desktop and select Properties,
Hardware,Device Manager. If yes what is the Device Error code?

Try Start, Run, type "sigverif.exe" without quotes and hit OK. What
drivers are listed as unsigned? Disregard those which are not checked.

Please post copies of all Error and Warning Reports appearing in the
System and Application logs in Event Viewer relating to the last boot in
normal mode . No Information Reports or Duplicates please. Indicate
which also appear in a previous boot.

You can access Event Viewer by selecting Start, Control Panel,
Administrative Tools, and Event Viewer. When researching the meaning
of the error, information regarding Event ID, Source and Description
are important.

HOW TO: View and Manage Event Logs in Event Viewer in Windows XP

A tip for posting copies of Error Reports! Run Event Viewer and double
click on the error you want to copy. In the window, which appears is a
button resembling two pages. Click the button and close Event
Viewer. Now start your message (email) and do a paste into the body of
the message. Make sure this is the first paste after exiting from
Event Viewer.

Disabled - This service will never start.
Manual - May be started when needed by an application or another

2) Try Autoruns from the MS Windows SysInternals site:
http://www.microsoft.com/technet/sysinternals/ProcessesAndThreads/Autoruns.mspx

AutoRuns will show/list all apps/etc. that load/run when you first
boot (Boot Execute tab),
when you logon (Logon tab) and other programs that load (grouped by
labeled tabs) for easy viewing.

It also provides the ability to selectively allows you to stop (use
with care) any program that you don't want to load. You can undo any
changes you have made.

Note: To get additional details on an item in the list you may need
to highlight the item (right click) and use the 'Search Online'
option to get the details, especially useful for the more obscure
items in the list. JS

I am running WindowsXP pro and upto sp2 my system used to boot/load
to the desktop in under 1 minute 30 secs with 2Gb of ram and a
2.8gHz dual core cpu.
Now since I installed sp3, although the system is a bit quicker, ie
programs load a bit quicker, explorer is a bit quicker etc, after a
reboot, it takes over 4 minutes to load the desktop, and sometimes
it does not load my network connections. This window is a blank, so
I have to reboot yet again and waith another 4 minutes plus to see
if it will load network connections 2nd time around.

Any suggestions as to what I can do to get back to a quick boot up
time etc.
Should I uninstall sp3?
Thanks

Thanks for the links, but I already had most of the non essential
services disabled according to the first link, there were just 1/2
more I disabled from the 2nd link.
I already have autoruns installed and it tells me that there are
dozens of dll's a swell as other things which are loaded during the
time
windows is loading.
I stopped a couple things which I thought were totally un neccessary,
but it still took 4 mins 30 secs for windows to load to a desktop!

Is there anything which will monitor the time(s) various dll's etc
take to load, so I can see what is really slowing the system down
during
loading? Thanks
