Missing Alarm Tab Under Power Options

Hey there

There should be a battery icon in the system tray of my laptop which,
when you hover over it, shows the %age charge remaining in the battery,
crucial info for my laptop which runs out of juice in about 30 mins
flat.

There is an AC plug power icon in the system tray but it remains a plug
even when the mains is totally disconnected. When you hover over it, it
still says 'ac power on'.

I have looked at the power management settings in Windows XP (via the
Control Panel) but cannot see any setting I can change to correct this
problem. Only 4 tabs are present: Schemes, Advanced , UPS, Hibernate.
The Alarms tab is missing. Regardless of how many times I uncheck/check
'show icon in tray', nothing helps.

Any help would be greatly appreciated
