DIVX is a free set of programs that handles multimedia, including movies.
It is available from:
http://www.divx.com/
Normally these programs work well under XP, and they come with an
uninstaller, which should be available via start--> settings--> control
pannel--> add-remove programs. Then uninstall everything that begins with
DIVX. Next, download and install the latest version of DIVX.
Note that you must be logged into an XP account with administrative
priveleges to install or uninstall software. Further, if the software has a
component that is normally in use (backround process), a reboot may be
required to remove that part of it. The uninstaller should sense this and
prompt you for a reboot.
You might also try the DIVX forums:

The Doom9 forums describe how to manually remove/control this particular
file:

I downloaded Divxsm recently and now i realised that somehow it is not
working; i wanted to delete it but it says " can not delete Divxsm,
acces is denied, make sure is not full or right protected and that the
file is not currently in use."
no other application was opened at that time; i deleted some other
files of that application, but it doesn't work, and the icon is still
on my desktop!!
Suggestions, please??
