rather like using an axe to trim one's fingernails. Sure, it'll
probably get the job done, but it's rather messy...., and almost always
unnecessary.
However, if that's what you want to do:
After backing up any data (being careful not to backup the virus)
you wish to transfer to the new OS installation, simply boot from the
WinXP installation CD. You'll be offered the opportunity to delete,
create, and format partitions as part of the installation process. (You
may need to re-arrange the order of boot devices in the PC's BIOS to
boot from the CD.)

Then the backed up data can be restored and applications re-installed.

Since I don't have much to back up and I have the SOFTWARE NEEDED that
came with may LAPTOP. Yesterday I tried to FORMAT the Disk and it
did!!!! It was able to remove the "VIRUS" but now I noticed that
nothing else was removed: PICS, MUSIC AN SOME DOCS, etc. Before
performing the FORMATTING The PC was using 13 gb. NOW is using17
gb... I want to get rid of everything and load windows on to EMPTY AND
CLEAN HARD DRIVE.
Please HELP!!!!
If your pics, music and some docs are still there then you did not FORMAT the drive. Formatting a drive wipes all data off. Nothing will survive. A fresh load of XP will not take 17 Gig.
You probably skipped a step to format the drive and just overwrote the OS, thus leaving all the old docs, pics etc.
