Ok, I've checked them out with Device Manager. There were 13 entries for
USB devices. I don't think I even have that many USB ports, but in any
event, I was able to find driver updates for two of them. Maybe that's
going to turn out to be the best solution yet. But I'll also go through the
sequence you detailed earlier. I'll do that later tonight and let you know
the outcome.
Thanks again for your interest and advice.

Start with Device Manager, you can (like your scanner) see if there are
any problems.
Should be labeled 'Universal Serial Bus controllers'.

JS, funny you should mention that. I recently purchased a USB hub and
I'm not certain it's working properly. As far as I can tell, the drivers
for it are updated. But on occasion, I've unplugged the scanner from one
USB port and I did not get a signal that the hardware had been unplugged.
Then when I plugged it into a different port, the hardware was detected.
So right now, I have the scanner plugged directly into one of the
computer's ports and it (that port) seems to be working fine.
Just to make sure all the ports are working correctly, could you refresh
my mind about how to update those drivers or to test those ports? I'm so
busy today I can hardly stay on any one topic for long. lol
Thanks again! You just might have zeroed in on a key issue I've been
more or less ignoring.

Almost forgot: It's might help if you try a different USB port if you
scanner is USB>

Ok thanks JS. I'll try that sequence exactly... tonight just to ensure
I don't screw anything up during the afternoon when I need my computer
for sure.
I'll let you know the results. Stay tuned!
Thanks again.

Ok, this is the way I would do it given the info you provided.
First check Epson's web site for the latest drivers and software
and download to a folder.
Now follow these steps
1) Disconnect the scanner.
2) Uninstall the software and twain drivers.
3) Remove any folders/files related to the twain drivers or scanner
software.
4) Check Device Manager and remove any entries if necessary.
5) Create a Restore Point
6) Scan registry using the brand name/make of the scanner as key word
for search.
(Delete any entries found, but be certain it's a scanner related
entry)
7) Reboot the PC and once again check Device Manager, it should show
noting for the scanner.
8) Now reinstall the software and twain drivers.
9) Shutdown the PC.
10) With the PC power off, connect the scanner and then restart/boot
to Windows.

Well I'm still having no luck. The device manager says the scanner's
driver is in place and that the hardware is working properly. But
the Smart Panel software can't find the driver. The software is
there... the driver is there, but the two are not communicating.
I've tried every way I can think of to uninstall all the software and
re-install it, but to no avail.
I'd sure appreciate any further advice. It would be nice to scan
documents I need for work.
Thanks again,
Danno

This time, no I don't think I deleted the directory. I'm pretty
sure I went down that path while trying earlier this week though.
I'll try it again today, and this time, I'll delete the directory
too. I'll let you know what happens.
Thanks again!

Did you delete the directory which contains the Twain drivers as
part of the uninstall process?

Thanks JS, but I've tried that until I'm blue in the face... to no
avail.
In fact I just tried it now, one more time... at your suggestion.
Device Manager says the scanner is installed and is working
properly. It
says the driver is
(Twain) is there. And the entire uninstall and re-install of
Epson's Smart
Panel software went ahead smoothly. But again.... Smart Panel
can't seem to
find the Twain driver.
This is a mystery to me, since it all worked well in the past.
The
operating system was freshly installed a little over a month ago,
and the
scanner has worked since then. When I disconnect the scanner,
windows
detects that it has been removed, and windows also detects when I
reconnect
the scanner.
Any further suggestions would be welcome.

Try disconnecting the scanner, then uninstall the scanner
software & twain drivers.
After the install shut the PC down, then connect the scanner and
reboot.

Hello,
For some reason my scanner won't work anymore. When I try to
use it, I get the following message:
"C:\Program Files\EPSON\Smart Panel\File.exe\:"/T:EPSON TWAIN 5"
Application can't be found."
When I check Device Manager, it shows the correct scanner and
indicates that the driver is in place.
When I remove and re-install the Twain driver, the message I get
in the notification area is that new hardware has
been found and that it is ready to use. I haven't moved any
files from where they were installed by the installation
software for Smart Panel, nor by the Twain installer.
I'd sure appreciate any advice as to what could be the problem.
Thanks in advance,
Danno
