Thank you for your response.
I initially tried to reinstall it without uninstalling it. Unfortunately, it
starts to install and then comes to an error message which says that it
cannot find AcroRead.msi in the file listed in a drop down menu. It gives me
a second choice in the menu and that doesnt work either. Then error message
1714 comes up.
Also, I cannot remove Adobe from the Add and Remove Programs screen so I
have to go to My Computer and get into program files to try and figure this
out.
It tells me in the error message to go to search and look for AcroRead.msi
and try to load it from where ever it is located. It is nowhere to be found.

I had Adobe 8.1 downloaded from their website. Everything was going
well until about 4 months or so ago when all at once I couldnt
access my files with the pdf extension. I tried to uninstall Adobe
and then reinstall but I get a message during installation about a
file AcroRead.msi cannot be located. I did a search from my pullup
menu and its nowhere to be found. In fact the error message number
is 1714. I dont know what to do or how this happened since I have
never had a problem with this adobe before.
I have McAfee downloaded as my security program. Do you think that
has something to do with it?
I would appreciate any help you could give me. I am really
frustrated with the lack of assistance I have received from
Microsoft and Adobe.
What happens if you download Adobe Acrobat Reader 8.1 again and just install
it over itself and then uninstall it? (In other words - don't worry about
uninstalling it first - just try to install it like it is not even there..)

Problem may have occured since the Adobe.msi was "ran" from the
Internet. This would download the MSI executable to the temporary
Internet files folder and ran. It is common practice to clear out the
temp files.
I believe Adobe may have extended clean-up tools.
