I have a Dell Inspiron 8500 with Window xp Home edition and the video
monitor
stopped working. It is blank (black) screen when window tries to
boot...get
some display when booting and F8 to safe mode. The laptop works when
hooked
to an external monitor (works fine). Also tried going back to a prior date
but that didn't work either. Any suggestions????
If the display works in Safe Mode - you aren't quite clear on this - it may
simply be that the video adapter settings are out of range for the display
itself.
This can cause the black-screen to happen, though the display itself can be
fine. It can't do what the card asks it to, so it shows black.
To fix this, press F8 and restart in *VGA* mode. Safe Mode won't let you
change the driver settings.
When in VGA mode, go to Control Panel, Display, Settings, and reset the
resolution and refresh rates to something the adapter and monitor both
support. Once it's done, restart normally.
It can happen, though, that displays fail. Unfortunately, this is the most
expensive component on a laptop, and prices for these units have dropped.
The result is that it can sometimes be cheaper to replace the entire laptop
than just the screen.
